REPORTING · 13th April 2011
Walter McFarlane
It is spring. The snow is receding off of peoples lawns and houses and properties. Some are happy. However, the District of Kitimat Engineering Department discovered with the spring thaw, there had been some unanticipated damage to District Property.

“Last Friday afternoon, the 1 million gallon wood stave water tank was taken off line after it was discovered that about ½ of it’s roof had collapsed. We still have our 2 - 1 Million Gallon welded steel tanks online which provides adequate storage for the water system for normal operations and fire flow during this time of year,” wrote Tim Glieg, acting Municipal Manager and head of the District’s Engineering Department in a memo to Council which was handed to them last night.

The water tank is over 40 years old and supplements the towns water supply during high water consumption and while the other tanks are being cleaned. The District has contacted International Tank and Pipe Co. and have inquired about the economic feasibility of repairing the tank based on it’s age and condition. They will return this item to Council once the situation has been reviewed.
