Yesterday morning we awoke to discover an immense earthquake had occurred in Japan. Our immediate task was to post tidal wave (Tsunami) warnings on the front page of all our coastal based websites. This morning we awoke to a more ominous threat, Japans five nuclear reactors in two locations in the hardest hit area, are in the beginning stages of a meltdown. The latest news is a large explosion occurred as the officials and plant workers were attempting to release building pressure in the reactors by venting steam into the atmosphere. The fear is the containment walls and dome has been breeched.

The difficulty is the Japanese attempts to cool the reactor core requires over a million gallons of water every minute. This is an astounding figure to comprehend. The fuel rods are reported to have become exposed due to the inability to provide the water necessary. This has prompted the Japanese Government to order evacuations around the two sites and report their fear the meltdown may have already begun.

There are only two previous examples of these types of catastrophes having occurred in history, Chernobyl, USSR and Three Mile Island, USA. The USA government attempted to cover up their Three Mile Island disaster as did the USSR. Japan is currently attempting to reduce the fears of the extent of the disaster they are facing with the meltdown refusing to consider anything like Chernobyl could occur.

In Russia, the reactor itself exploded due to a failed experiment. The infrastructure to cool and shutdown the associated reactors were still in place and as they determined the fate of the entire situation, the other reactors were orderly shut down.

This is not possible in Japan. There is no power to run water pumps. There is no infrastructure to deliver the water to the pumps and any readily available water is polluted with silt and debris.

As the world waits and watches the suffering of the people in Japan, a likely even more cataclysmic disaster is about to unfold, one that will have devastating impacts felt world wide as the winds carry the radioactive fallout across the globe. It would appear building these reactors on known fault lines and fracture zones wasn’t such a good idea after all. This is not just a short sighted issue with the Japanese. The USA government allows one to be operated virtually right on top of a known Californian fault, the Diablo Canyon plant at San Louis Obispo.

The US military is assisting the Japanese to find a manner in which to deliver the required water to cool these reactors. In two days the reality will become clearer. It has been reported that it takes 48 hours to cool the core to a stable shut down position.

Too little too late, but a large diesel backup pump would have worked in this occasion.
1- Main power failure that killed the electric pumps.
2- Backup generator failure could not get electric pumps on line.
3-Battery backup limited the pump to a few hours at best.
If they would have had a backup diesel driven pump, this may have averted this disaster. Most diesel engines are very reliable. Too bad they haven't thought of that.
