REPORTING · 6th January 2011
Walter McFarlane
The water at Alcan Beach was reported to be warmer than frigid air at noon in Kitimat on January first, 2011. Around 28 brave souls; the bravest of which were in bathing suits and bikinis, made a mad dash down the boat launch and into the cold water. This was the 2011 20th Annual Polar Bear Swim put on by the Kitimat Marlin Swim Club.

Prior to the dip, those assembled were instructed not to swim across to the other side of the Douglas Channel and were advised there was no prize for staying in the longest.

The Coast Guard was out in the water and the ambulance was on stand by. A crackling fire was warming those standing around it and melting the ice it sat on. Hot dogs and hot chocolate, which were provided by Overwaitea, were available by donation with the money going into the Kitimat Food Bank.
