REPORTING · 30th December 2010
These are our favourite top ten events in Kitimat in 2010. These are the events which are organized as fundraisers, community events and bring the community closer.
10 CANADA DAY
Kitimat always pulls out all the stops for Canada Day. The Parade, the awards, the Show and Shine, poker, swimming, fire works and so much more. Canada Day was excellent
09 THE RELAY FOR LIFE
The Relay For Life is one of those events which really brings the community out to do laps of the high school track while raising money for a good cause. 2010 was a significant year for the relay because, not only did Kitimat raise $111,674 for Cancer research, the Relay for Life broke the one million dollar milestone.
Kitimat’s Rodeo Week was certainly a week promoting community spirit. On the day of the Rodeo the community had breakfast with all proceeds going to the Kitimat Animal Shelter. The bull riding was amazing and the Copper Town Clown was hilarious. The show also featured pyro-techniques by the Mount Elizabeth Theatre.
07 THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
The International Day of Peace was marked with a human peace symbol in the parking lot at Riverlodge. Speakers included MLA Robin Austin, Mayor Joanne Monaghan and
representatives from the Rotary Club and Rotary Youth Leadership Award Youth.
06 STAND UP FOR GREAT BEAR
On the same day as the Relay for Life, Norm Hann set off by paddleboard on a 385 kilometre trip from Kitimat to Bella Bella. The goal was to raise awareness of the oil tankers coming to the waters of the North Coast by following the route the tankers would take. He would later report back on the wonders witnessed during his trip.
