COMMENTARY · 22nd December 2010
At the Kitimat Council meeting 20 Dec. 2010 there was a request from UNBC (University of Northern B.C.) to co-sponsor a public forum on the Northern Gateway Project. Other communities along the corridor are doing this including Terrace.
The parties to be represented are to be Enbridge, a project proponent, a project opponent and First Nations’ interest.
The immediate response from Mayor Monagham was “NO”. The councilors present pointed out the sponsorship of such a forum would not contravene the decision of council to be neutral on the issue until the JRP (Government Joint Review Panel) has come up with a decision. It is merely to present data from both sides to inform the citizens of Kitimat on the pros and cons of the project.
The mayor then brought forward a motion to table the issue until the participants could be consulted.
We do not know, of course, at this time who the participants are other than Enbridge.
Is this another signal from the mayor how democracy and information flow works in Kitimat?
