NEWS RELEASE · 22nd December 2010
Walter McFarlane
Benilde Gomes, Secretary Treasurer of the Terrace and Kitimat Labour Council and Tom Laport, former president of the Kitimat and Terrace Labour Council took the stand at the Kitimat City Council meeting last Monday, December 20, to garner Council’s support for a petition.

“I’m certain your aware of the issues 32 million dollars that was given to West Fraser in supporting a greener sustainable project and unfortunately, we don’t know what happened to those funds but we do know Euorcan is now shut down. We are seeking endorsement by the Kitimat Council to accept this petition,” said Gomes.

She asked Council to get signatures on the petition and give it to Nathan Cullen. Laport explained they are approaching other City Councils but came to Kitimat first.

The petition asks the Federal Government: “If unable to recoup the money, establish an endowment fund of equal size to replace the lost investment and place it in a trust (similar to the Northern Development Trust Initiative or Columbia Basin Trust) to encourage economic development in the region.”
