Kitimat Ice Demons-key sponsors combine for Fill-the Rink night at Tamitik, Saturday. Free hockey trip to Vancouver is main prize.
The Kitimat Ice Demons will host the Terrace River Kings on Saturday Dec. 18, and (despite the closeness of the Christmas holidays) have combined withtheir key sponsors and the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce to host this night as a special community promotional event.
Envision Financial, the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce, Hawkair, Astral Media, the Kitimat & Terrace Daily Online and the Northern Sentinel-Northern Connector are among the businesses and organizations combining to boost attendance at the latest “Fill-the Rink” edition of the Christmas local derby between the two old rivals.
Both teams have won one game on home ice this season, both by convincingly big scores, 7-0 for the River Kings in Terrace and 8-3 for Kitimat, in the return match in Kitimat late last month.
Wendy Kraft, manager of Envision, is chairing a special committee to repeat a successful community support night last season which saw some 1,300 fans, friends and other people pack the rink – and, as last year, one lucky pair of spectators will win the Ultimate Fan Package, which includes free airline tickets to Vancouver, courtesy of Hawkair, near-the-rink hotel rooms in Vancouver and tickets to a Vancouver Canucks game at Rogers Place, as well as Demons' merchandise.
Envision Thundersticks will be available for the first 1000 people at the game, while kids will be able to experience face-painting from a number of volunteers in the Tamitik lobby.
Special print and radio advertising is also being used to help boost attendance at what will be only the third home game of the season for the Ice Demons. Both the Demons and the River Kings are tied for second place in the CIHL West Division, with both teams having played 11 games and each with 12 points. Just ahead, with 14 points are the Prince Rupert Rampage, which took two games on the road in Hazelton last weekend, to pass both the River Kings and the idle Ice Demons.
The stats however could be different by puck drop as the River Kings have a rare Friday night contest with the Rampage in Prince Rupert on Friday night.
The “Fill the Rink night” will feature a variety of on-ice games and promotions, a name-the-Demons contest and various other draws for other valuable prizes, including a pair of Ice Demons autographed sticks number of draws for special prizes and several surprise events, while the team plans to add its last season's league championship banner to the rafters along with the numerous other banners won by the Demons in recent years. There will also be a beer garden. In the arena.
For the kids the fun will continue into Sunday when the annual "Skate with The Ice Demons” will be held at Tamitik arena, between 4:30 and 5:45 pm. Admission is free with a contribution of a non-perishable food item for the Kitimat Food Bank.
