NEWS RELEASE · 17th November 2010
School District # 82
The Board of Education, Coast Mountains School District, is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Nancy V. Wells as Superintendent of Schools and Chief Executive Officer effective November 10, 2010.

Ms. Wells, a highly respected leader in BC Public Education, is an experienced Superintendent of Schools, having served in the position in the North Thompson, Mission and Gold Trail School Districts. She is also no stranger to any of the communities served by the Coast Mountains School District, as her family moved to the Kitimat/Terrace area in the 1960's, living at Lakelse Lake where her father flew crews into Kemano for Trans Provincial Airlines, and she also lived in Stewart as a university student. She then returned to the area in the 1980's, teaching and serving as Vice Principal at Skeena Junior Secondary School and enjoying almost a decade as Principal of Uplands Elementary School.

Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Education degree from the University of Victoria. Continuing a lifelong connection to and respect for the Aboriginal people of British Columbia, her most recent professional work has focused on community development in Aboriginal communities, particularly as a member of the design team for an assets based program entitled "Honouring the Gifts".

Ms. Wells spent two days in the district earlier this month meeting with the Board of Education and District Educational Leaders. Barry Pankhurst, Board Chair, on behalf of all trustees, has expressed their collective optimism that with Ms. Wells on their team the board can look forward to moving ahead and focusing on the learner in a positive manner.

Respected as an effective team builder and communicator who puts the learning needs of children first, Ms. Wells is eager to begin to form the relationships that will make it possible to continue the good work already taking place in the school district, while enabling her to play a key role in ensuring a strong future for Coast Mountains’ learners and schools.

Informal gatherings hosted by the Board of Education will be held in early December 2010 in the communities of Hazelton, Kitwanga, Stewart, Kitimat and Terrace inviting interested members of the public and staff to welcome Nancy to our educational community.
