REPORTING · 15th November 2010
Walter McFarlane
The fifth question concerned the derelict buildings and removal of the eyesores.

Edwin Empinado suggested approaching the owner and asking them how they could improve the buildings and how to go about utilizing the buildings.

Debbie Rauhanen said the community and Council’s responsibility to make certain the owners of the buildings keep them in good repair.

Mary Murphy pointed out the building owners are paying taxes to the community and suggested this was all they had to do. She said there is a bylaw where owners had to maintain their yard. If a yard is not maintained, it will be cleaned up and the owner charged.

Linda Campbell’s response was it was something Council fought about. She said there were more laws protecting the building owner then laws protecting the municipality. This would have to change.

Corinne Scott said the buildings were an eyesore in a town of beauty. She said she lived in communities with bylaws to remove unsightly premises.

Michelle deLisser stated the buildings were owned by businessmen from Vancouver. She suggested Council contact the building owners and ask them to hire someone to look after them or implement a bylaw to keep them up to standards.
