Update on RCMP Hwy 16 armed person situation
RCMP have one of two males in custody, Hwy 16 re-opening, police continue to locate the main suspect believed to be armed.
"Members of the RCMP North District Emergency Response Team have arrested one of two men wanted in connection with an ongoing Terrace RCMP investigation. A second man, the father of the main suspect was also sought by police in connection with their investigation. Police were able to confirm that the father was also at the residence since RCMP surrounded the property last night. The older man was taken into custody without incident late this morning" stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk.
"The ERT members were able to only safely observe the younger man fleeing the residence. ERT members continue to maintain a perimeter around the area that he is now believed to be in. The area in question poses little risk to the general public in relation to Highway 16, therefore we are able to safely re-open the highway to normal traffic. We have deployed an RCMP Air Services helicopter to support the Emergency Response Team in their efforts, this includes the continued use of a Police Dog Service team as well.
It is not a matter that the individual eluded police, but more indicative of our attempts and commitment to resolving the matter without further incident. Given our information, it is with little doubt that challenging the male as he fled could have resulted in a deadly confrontation. We are maintaining a perimeter in the area and will continue our efforts to arrest the man" added Cpl Dan Moskaluk.
