At the last City Council Meeting Madeleine Robinson brought to our attention a very worthwhile and needy cause for the Kitimat community.
HELP BRING OUR COURTS TO LIFE!
Mt. Elizabeth high school's tennis courts are in desperate need of repair. The courts have not been used by the students or community in over 12 years due to safety concerns. This used to be an active centre for the school, clubs and the community. At this time, the courts remain locked up as they have drastically deteriorated. There are large cracks in the pavement with grass and shrubs growing through the cracks, glass and garbage and debris fill the courts. The fence is falling apart and the shed door and windows are boarded up. We recently organized a parent volunteer group to clean up the courts for now but they still cannot be used in this unsafe state. This space has potential and its a shame and a great loss to our student population and community to loose what we once had.
Our highschool Parent Advisory Council is hoping to access the Aviva Community Funding to revive these courts and turn them into a NEW multi-purpose outdoor recreation facility, similar to the picture I have posted. This court renovation would include 2 tennis courts, a basketball court and a road hockey court. This facility would give students as well as the entire community, choices and opportunities to experience easily accessible outdoor recreation as a class, group or individual activity. This project would boost the morale of students and staff and instil pride in our community.
We foresee this project providing a healthy active lifestyle and safe meeting place for all ages. Physical activity is the core to a person's physical and mental well being. We are confident this project will meet the physical education learning outcomes of all students and allow the entire community to participate in a variety of activities. Outdoor recreation also keeps our youth involved in a positive environment.
The estimate budget is as follows:
$89, 137.00 - Surface finish, paving/ $30, 206.00 - Fencing, with slats for wind control / $5, 200.00 - 2 Tennis Nets & posts, 2 Floor hockey Nets, 2 basketball systems with nets, 2 aluminum benches/$5, 000.00 - No Post Fencing (2 sections)/$10, 000.00 - Perimetre drainage and manhole drain/$14, 000.00 - Shed repair/$10, 000.00 - Labour.
Total Budget - $163, 543.00 + Tax - (estimate)
We hope you can help us to bring these courts to life for our School and Community at large.
