REPORTING · 7th September 2010
It was raining over City Centre Mall on Sunday, September 5th but this did not discourage people from coming out to Fishstock, a celebration of the 23rd annual Fishing Derby and many Kitimat Residents huddled under the awning of the few tents which were set up for the beer and root beer gardens and the mall’s overhang.
Trish Parsons, Manager of the Chamber of Commerce joked it was bringing people together. She expressed there were many people out on the river on drift boats and in favourite fishing spots as well as out on the ocean. A derby hotline allowed the fishermen to call in to find out the best weights while they remained on the river.
Despite the rain, many of the events still took place. Breakfast was served by the Looking for Love Animal Shelter. The Casting pond, stage show and kids zone were enjoyed.
There were plenty of prizes being given out. “This is the first year we’ve had the scavenger hunt. We had a number of entries and three of those entries will be drawn at 6:30 for the three rod and reel combo. This year, we have over 111 prizes for the random prize draws. [We] have lots of freebies so you did not need a ticket to walk away with a prize today,” said Parsons.
At the end of the day, the awards were handed out to the winners and the grand prizes were drawn for. There were more then 370 entrants in the fishing derby.
