British Columbia is again front and-centre on the world's stage as B.C. Week begins at the Shanghai World Expo's Canadian Pavilion, announced Iain Black, Minister of Small Business Technology and Economic Development, and Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of State for Intergovernmental Relations.

"Earlier this year, the world's attention was focused on British Columbia as we hosted the Winter Olympics, and we used the opportunity to market our province to overseas investors," said Black, "We're building on that momentum, using the Shanghai Expo as a great platform to meet face-to- face with Chinese partners."

During B.C. Week, the Province will promote British Columbia to Chinese companies and investors with a series of seminars and promotional events supported by the Province's China-based trade and investment representatives. The events will focus on urban development, green buildings life sciences, tourism, education, mining and B.C.'s Provincial Nominee Program, which attracts skilled workers and business people.

"This is the largest world's fair in history, and I look forward to promoting our province and B.C.-based companies to potential Chinese investors," said Yamamoto, who is travelling to Shanghai to attend B.C. Week. "So far nearly 50 million people have visited Shanghai 2010. British Columbia is honoured to have the opportunity to join in Expo's success and raise the province's profile at the same time."

A delegation of more than 50 private companies, municipalities, transportation authorities, post-secondary institutes and business development organizations are participating at B.C. Week. Many, including the B.C.'s International Financial Centre, KPMG Vancouver, the Burnaby Board of Trade, and the cities of Kamloops, Prince George and Dawson Creek will give their own promotional presentations.

Following B.C. Week, which runs from Sept. 3 to 6, government officials and several dozen representatives from British Columbia-based companies and organizations will attend the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) in Xiamen. Now in its 14th year, CIFIT is organized by the Chinese government to promote bilateral investment.

China is British Columbia's second-largest bilateral trading partner. In 2009, B.C.'s domestic exports to China exceeded $2.6 billion. Over the first six months of 2010, exports are up by 37 per cent over 2009's record pace.
