NEWS RELEASE · 10th August 2010
M. of Healthy Living & Sport
Team BC's mission staff for the 2011 Kamloops Western CanadaSummer Games have been chosen, Minister of Healthy Living and Sport Ida Chong announced today as Kamloops celebrated the one-year-to-go countdown to the Games.

"This talented team of mission staff from around the province will provide Team BC with the management and support it needs to perform at the highest level during next year's Games,"said Chong. "The ultimate goal of our athletes and coaches at these Games is to achieve a personal best and the mission staff will ensure they have the tools to get the job done."

Chef de mission Irene Schell will lead 15 mission staff members who will provide administrative, logistical and performance preparation support for the athletes and coaches attending the Games. This is Schell's first time as chef de mission. She has extensive Games experience as Team BC mission staff, and is the event and technology manager with the BC Games Society. The mission team includes practitioners, communications and other support staff.

Team BC will send 356 athletes aged 12 to 22 and 69 coaches to the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games. B.C. has won the Western Canada Summer Games Cup every year since the Games' inception in 1975.

The 2011 Western Canada Summer Games take place Aug. 5-14 in Kamloops and will bring together approximately 2,300 athletes competing in 18 sports, along with coaches, managers and officials from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory.

"Our Team BC mission staff will be working extra-hard to help our athletes compete and win on their home turf, making this a very special experience for the entire team," added Chong.

These Games are Western Canada's largest multi-sport competition for young athletes. The Western Canada Summer Games bisect the Canada Summer Games and provide an opportunity for B.C.'s top age-class athletes to test their athletic talent against the best in the west.
