NEWS RELEASE · 4th August 2010
District of Kitimat
The District of Kitimat has forged a new partnership to help secure grant funding for a wide range of community projects and programs. The District of Kitimat budgeted $10,000 to employ a grant writer this year, contingent on receiving financial assistance from the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDI). "We received $7500 from the NDI Grant Writing Support program", stated Mayor Joanne Monaghan, "which allowed us to get this assistance program up and running. Mr. Fred Wilson, of Kitimat, has been hired as our Grant Writer. Fred is available to help the District of Kitimat and non-profit community groups identify potential sources of funding for projects and programs, to complete funding applications and to monitor these applications through to completion".

Mr. Wilson will report to a Committee which includes representatives from the District of Kitimat and the Social Planning Oversight Group, including: The Chamber of Commerce, Kitimat Child Development Centre, Ministry of Children & Family Development and Tamitik Status of Women. The Committee will provide overall guidance and establish criteria to fairly allocate Mr. Wilson's time among the assistance requests that are submitted.

Mayor Monaghan and Ms Margaret Warcup, of the Kitimat Child Development Centre, agree working together on this project has great potential to help make Kitimat an even better place to live. "This program will be a key way to give help support the non-profit sector by providing grant application research and writing assistance" stated Mayor Monaghan. "We hope this leads directly to increased success accessing financial grants for capital projects and both new initiatives and ongoing programs". "Over the longer term, adds Ms Warcup, we believe Mr. Wilson may build the grant writing capacity and expertise that is so necessary to ensure long-term success of many local programs and services".
