Fire Fighters were called out for a car fire in strawberry meadows on Sunday, July 8th.
“The Crews wound up getting called Sunday Afternoon for a car fire down in strawberry meadows south of Jack Oviatt’s house in a gravel pit,” said Acting Fire Chief, Trent Bossence.
The cause of the fire was a pile of wood shavings and wood waste which had dried out in the summer heat. The vehicle was stuck in the chip pile and the exhaust caused the chips to ignite. High winds led to spot fires in the brush around the gravel pit.
10 firefighters were called in and the fire was out just after 7. Oviatt was trying to restore the gravel pit to forest which is why the tree waste was present.
“Everyone needs to be aware in the summer months, particularly this time of year that the forest, urban settings, everything is really dry and we haven’t had any substantial rain in the last little while to get anything wet and soak the forest floor down so everything’s tinder dry,” said Bossence.
