REPORTING · 13th July 2010
The 5th Annual Dragon Boat Regatta took place on Saturday, July 10th at Minnette Bay Marina. 12 teams competed in the races and despite the day starting grey, the water was calm. By the end of the day, the sun had come out and the stands were full.
Ruth Mill’s and Dwight Magee introduced the Regatta and Magee introduced the teams. This year, there was a new feature in the regatta, a guts and glory endurance race which would put the three teams with the best times against each other a 100 metre race, 4 times longer then what they would usually race. The winners of the Guts and Glory race would receive paddles engraved with the Regatta information courtesy of Rio Tinto Alcan.
Tony Brady said a few words on behalf of the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce. “When I think about Dragon Boating, in particular, Dragon Boating in Kitimat, a few things come to mind. Teamwork, camaraderie, competition, participation, community involvement, our surroundings, the cultural diversity which makes up Kitimat and our heritage,” said Brady.
He encouraged the racers to respect the other competitors, forge friendships, enjoy the beauty of the ocean, appreciate Kitimat’s Heritage and remember this event was possible because of community involvement.
Sammy Robinson from the Kitamaat Village was called upon to bless the event and dot the eye of the Dragon. He gave thanks for their being no rain, the out of town guests and requested the creator to be with the pilots and the paddlers. With that said, he dotted the eye of the dragon awakening it.
The races began and carried on through out the afternoon. At the end of the day, the team photos were distributed to the racers and plaques for each division were displayed. Mayor Joanne Monaghan was present to assist with the distribution and to draw a trip for two to Vancouver.
“What a perfect day you had today,” said Monaghan. She thanked all the people who helped out on behalf of Mayor and Council. She promised good weather for the fifth Dragon Boat Races.
