The Association of Administrative and Professional Staff (AAPS) at the University of British Columbia has reached a tentative agreement with UBC under the government's 2010 mandate, announced Finance Minister Colin Hansen.

AAPS represents approximately 3,000 people working as management and professional staff at the university's campuses throughout B.C. Management and professional employees perform a wide range of functions at UBC, including medical and student professionals, directors, managers, program co-ordinators and office administrators.

"As each new agreement is reached, it shows the positive progress being made at the negotiation tables," said Hansen. "Given the current economic situation, it's a credit to the unions and employers who have been able to work together and carry out collective bargaining to ensure stability across B.C.'s public sector."

Members of AAPS will vote on the agreement this month before it is ratified.

"UBC's management and professional staff are an important part of the operations at the campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna," said Advanced Education and Labour Market Development Minister Moira Stilwell. "This tentative agreement means students and faculty can continue to depend on the daily contributions made by these members of UBC."

Government has already announced its intention to control spending on wages during this round of bargaining. To protect jobs and preserve vital services British Columbians depend on, government does not have any funding for new wage increases as collective agreements are renewed.

"This tentative agreement represents an important and worthwhile process to discover joint solutions," said UBC President Prof. Stephen Toope. "The clear and healthy dialogue of this round of bargaining has strengthened the university's valued relationships with its management and professional staff."

There are approximately 310,000 unionized workers in occupations throughout B.C.'s public sector, the great majority of which have agreements that expire between March 31, 2010 and Dec. 31, 2010. Just over half of B.C.'s public sector employees have now re- negotiated agreements that were set to expire in 2010, including major agreements in the health sector and the public service.
