The Kitimat Multicultural Society and people who came from all over the world gathered at the Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, June 19th at 11:30 to raise the flags.
”Today is our flag raising. It is our annual event and every year we raise the flags,” said Raymond Raj.
He expressed this was the national flag raising for Canada. “Canada is the only country in the world that allows people who come from other countries, they allow them to keep their heritage and their customs, their culture, their religion, everything,” said Raj.
He expressed Canada is not a melting pot but a country based on diversity which respects all the flags in the world. He estimated they would be raising 20 flags. The flags are due to be taken down on November 11th.
Mayor Joanne Monaghan was present to raise the flag of the United States. “We can all celebrate each other’s culture and I think that’s so important. That’s what I’ve always liked about Kitimat and when people back home in Minnesota ask what Kitimat’s like, I say: ‘It’s wonderful. It’s like having all the world at your feet cause everybody’s here. I really appreciate that,” said Monaghan.
After the flag raising, cake and refreshments were served.
