The Stanley Cup Playoff Finals commence this Saturday at 5:00 PM. This is going to be a series for the books. With both teams having not won a Stanley Cup in eons, history will be made.
Both teams have had a wild ride this year. East Conference winners Philadelphia Flyers started of smoothly, easily eliminating the New Jersey Devils, the first team to be knocked out of the playoffs.
Next they played the Boston Bruins, who had themselves eliminated the Buffalo Sabres. Here they did indeed already make history. After losing the first three games to the Bruins it was all or nothing and all is what they gave. They became the third only team to come back from a 3-0 deficit in the series and win it. As if that wasn't enough, in Game 7 of that series they also come back from a 3-0 deficit that game and still won!
Next they played the Cinderella Story team, the Montreal Canadiens, who had a terrific year. Not only did they beat the President's Trophy winners ,the Washington Capitals, coming back from a 3-1 deficit, but then went on to beat the eliminators of the Ottawa Senators and last years Stanley Cup winners, the Pittsburgh Penguins. That’s right Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby both out.
But none of this mattered to the Flyers. They came out with two shutouts, one loss, and then another shutout. When game five came around, Montreal tried to stay alive but to no avail. The Flyers went on to win the game 4-2 thus becoming the East Coast Champs.
On to the West Conference winners, the Chicago Blackhawks. They started their playoffs quietly beating the Nashville Predators in the first series 4-2.
The other teams in the league had amazing first series’ also. The San Jose Sharks eliminated the Colorado Avalanche in game six. The Detroit Red Wings beat the Phoenix Coyotes in game seven. Finally the Canucks beat the Los Angeles Kings in game six.
The Canucks would become the Blackhawks next victim. The Canucks started off strong with a huge 5-1 win over the 'Hawks but would go on to lose the next three games. They won game five keeping themselves alive but finally succumbed to Chicago in game 6.
On the other side the San Jose Sharks were playing the Detroit Red Wings. The Sharks almost got a full sweep on Detroit, but in game four the Red Wings pulled a huge rabbit out of their hat with a 7-1 win. But that wasn't enough to keep San Jose at bay, losing game five 2-1.
Now on to the West conference final between powerhouse San Jose and quiet Chicago; no one ever guessed what would happen next. Each game was close, but with the same result. Chicago wins. With four straight wins, Chicago was the only team to get a 4-0 sweep in this year’s playoffs.
So to recap we have the Philadelphia Flyers, a solid team with an incredible defence and a thorough persistence to win this year's Stanley Cup, and the Chicago Blackhawks, back from the days of the original six, with great all-round fully determined team to bring home the Cup.
