$4.4 MILLION FOR TRANSITION HOUSING IN PRINCE RUPERT
The Province is providing more than $4.4 million to redevelop Moresby Townhouses into 23 apartments of second-stage transition housing for women and children fleeing domestic abuse, and women in need of supportive recovery, Minister of Housing and Social Development Rich Coleman announced today. The new housing will be operated and managed by the North Coast Transition Society.
"The Moresby Townhouses have provided affordable family housing for over 40 years, however, their recent high vacancy rate and need for extensive building and foundation repairs provides us with an opportunity to replace them with important transitional housing for Prince Rupert," said Coleman.
Redeveloping provincially owned properties that have aging buildings on underutilized land is a key element of the provincial housing strategy, Housing Matters BC, and allows the Province to meet today's need for a wider range of affordable housing options.
"Replacing the obsolete Moresby site with transition housing will meet an urgent need in our community and we welcome the Province's leadership on this issue," said Prince Rupert Mayor Jack Mussallem. "A supportive transitional facility for women in Prince Rupert is a fundamental part of building a healthy community, and this new housing will help many women find a path to a better life."

"This new building will allow them to stabilize and rebuild their lives in safety."
Transition housing provides temporary apartments with support services for up to two years for women and children fleeing domestic abuse, which gives them time and support to stabilize their lives before moving on to more independent, permanent forms of housing.
Of the 24 apartments at the Moresby Townhouses, only eight households currently remain. The Province has developed "tenant first" guiding principles for tenant relocation and will work with the tenants to identify a range of options for their relocation.
The Province is funding the redevelopment of the Moresby Townhouses, which integrates health and social services with housing to help people move beyond temporary shelter to more secure housing, greater self- reliance and appropriate employment.
In 2010-11, B.C.'s budget for social housing is approximately $562 million, more than four times as much as in 2001.
