NEWS RELEASE · 8th April 2010
Office of the Premier
The accomplishments of B.C. public service employees and their northern partners were recognized today with the Premier's Innovation and Excellence Awards, announced Premier Gordon Campbell.

"These awards recognize our best and brightest employees who have contributed to the BC public service through innovative ideas and progressive solutions, teamwork and leadership," said Premier Campbell. "We appreciate the work of our dedicated provincial employees who consistently bring excellence to the broad range of services they provide."

This year, employees from the North region received awards in the Cross-Government Integration, Organizational Excellence, Partnership and Service Excellence categories.

"Public service employees live and work in over 280 communities in every region of the province," said Citizens' Services Minister Ben Stewart, whose ministry administers the awards. "These awards are one way to honour the achievements, successes and commitment of employees in all parts of the province."

Staff at the Integrated Land Management Bureau received an award for their collaborative consultations on the proposed Mt. Milligan gold- copper mine. The Ministry of Forests and Range were awarded organizational excellence honours on the Northwest Forest Restoration and Enhancement Program.

Two awards were given to the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Petroleum Resources for their achievements in the North. The ministry worked with First Nations to create a youth training program and a strong, positive partnership with the Northeast Energy and Mines Advisory Committee.

Premier Campbell announced this year's recipients via streaming online video presentation, an innovative approach to the regional awards ceremony. This new approach was taken to balance resources with the importance of employee recognition while reducing travel costs and emissions.

Similar presentations will honour Interior, Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island employees, with the final celebration being a provincial award ceremony in Victoria.

The BC Public Service is the province's largest corporate employer and was recently named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers and one of Canada's Most Family Friendly Employers for the first time. The organization has also been named one of the province's top 50 employers for the past two consecutive years and was one of Canada's Greenest Employers in 2009.
