Rio Tinto Alcan has terminated their lease with Moon Bay Marina which is located on Alcan owned property. Boat owners have until May 1st to remove their boats from the Marina and will have to make new arrangements for mooring their boats. This has lead to concerns from boat owners.
“Given Rio Tinto Alcan’s commitment to Regional Industrial Development, the decision to terminate the Moon Bay Property Commercial Lease is a very difficult one. However, after several years of being aware of the unacceptable condition of Moon Bay property and the many exhaustive attempts to implore the leasee to practice responsible stewardship practices over the years without improvement, we felt that we did not have a real choice in the matter, and so are not pleased to be in this position,” said Colleen Nyce.
According to Nyce, a majority of the boat owners were aware of the conditions and have brought their concerns to Rio Tinto Alcan, which lead to the termination of the lease. She was unable to comment on what the conditions were, because this is between Rio Tinto Alcan and the current owners.
She was able to say this stems from an environmental audit back in 2008. For the future of the marina, Nyce stated: “This will be up to the people to decide.”
