Kitimat has been granted the honour of hosting the Bantum Boys 2010 Divisions A, B and C Provincial Championships. On Monday, February 8th, Barbara Campbell, representing the Minor Softball Association approached Council to request a grant for $3000. The tournament is scheduled for July 9th, 10th and 11th.
“Our Committee is now fast at work. We know that we have a timeframe in place and we know that we have a lot to do to host a championship of this sort. Two years ago we hosted a championship as well. It was a tremendous success, well received by not only Kitimat but Kitamaat Village. The bleachers were full and we made Kitimat quite proud of who we are and what we stand for,” said Campbell.
Council approved the grant. They hope to have all of the events at the Riverlodge field. “I think that the support that we received from the city is to be commended. I’m really pleased that we got that grant. It gives us the opportunity to move forward,” said Campbell.
Kitimat hosted the Midget Division Provincials several years ago so the organizers know what they have to do. There will be some training and upgrading for some of the officials for the tournament. They are expecting about 125 players, coaches and managers. Teams will be coming from across the province. One has already booked ahead.
“Two years ago, the bleachers were absolutely full. We were well attended by Kitamaat Village and Kitimat,” said Campbell. “It’s a breath of fresh air for this tournament. The response that we get from the community is tremendous.”
