CONTRIBUTION · 12th February 2010
“All the world’s a stage”. Well our little corner of the world came to the Mount Elizabeth Theatre stage during February 4 – 7th by way of the High Schools Drama Festival. Kitimat hosted representatives from Prince Rupert, Smithers, Hazelton and Houseton; showcased 11 plays and provided four workshops. The adjudicator was Tim Johnson whose credentials list Technical Director at Chemainus Theatre and running his own production company, Random Acts of Production. Workshop facilitators were Nicole Busby often seen performing with Western Edge Theatre Company in Nanaimo; Karla Hennig, one time drama teacher here at Mount Elizabeth and currently managing the REM Lee Theatre in Terrace; Hans Saefkow, Set designer and Technical director at the Della Herman Theatre, Smithers and finally our very own Graham Guegan, resident expert on the MET’s intelligent lighting system.
All the plays were performed with intensity and style, obviously the result of hard work and commitment, and as the adjudicator said in his opening remarks before announcing the winners on Sunday – not all will become actors – but all will benefit from the camaraderie and discipline which is to be found in the Performing Arts. As I sat in the audience on each of the nights of performance I was struck, as always, with the respectful but warm, joyous, even response to each other’s efforts.

Finally, this event occurred because of the volunteered time and energy of a number of people, especially the teachers and staff in each school who guided these performances, all of which were extra curricular activities. However the biggest nod of thanks should go to our own, John Rowe, who spearheaded this event, wrote one of the pieces and directed the two entries from Kitimat. Well done John.
