Music echoed through down town Kitimat on January 29th when skiers and snowboarders gathered for the kick off event of the Winter Festival D’Hivre. The Rail Jam was well attended by the residents of Kititimat.
“It’s fairly similar to last year, we’re going to have a bunch of kids, music playing, we have some bands and we have the rails. We have skiers and snowboarders showing their skills on the three different rail features and two different jump features at the bottom,” said Chance Healey, Head Coach from Shames Mountain.
The features included an urban straight bar, a wave rail and a C-Box on top of the quarter pipe. 101 Industries put together the rails and the boxes while Jack and Shaun Oviatt sculpted the snow hill.
The kids had 2 hours to practice before the competition began. Around 7:00 the practice was over. Each division had three runs to achieve two good runs. Prizes were provided by local stores.
On Skis for the 13 and under division, Jared Thornton took 1st, Tyler Harnadeks took 2nd and Trever Mine toke 3rd. In the 18+ division for skis: Tim Smith took 1st, Everett Hadjea and Luke Fokkens took 2nd and Wade Foster took 3rd.
On the Snowboard for ages 14-17: Alex MacDougall took 1st, Travis Hoornborg took 2nd and Jacob Rosenboum took 3rd. For boards 18+ Taylor James took 1st, Lee Millar took 2nd and Jonny Mohler took 3rd.
Shades of Grey and Hanging by a Thread were performing after the Rail Jam winners were announced. “The weather held for us and we have a good night tonight,” commented Marcy Rice, Organizer.
