NEWS RELEASE · 18th January 2010
Kitimat Food Bank
Kitimat did it again – what an amazing community – even with the downturn in the economy both locally and globally, the people of Kitimat came through with final total for the 2009 Christmas Hamper Appeal being $32,533.94! This is the second highest amount in donations since our inception as the Kitimat Community Help Agency back in the late 1950’s with 2008 being the highest at $37,000. We at the Kitimat Food Bank are extremely pleased with the cash donations, all the boxes of food and gifts that were received. We even had enough gifts for everyone on our list. Thank you.
Donations for the final week were as follows: L Slyherman $125; R McLaren $100; D. Zaharchuk $200; M Ouwehand $90; H Jonkman $50; M Gairdner $100; S Krahn $100; Cook’s Jewellers Employees $85; Anonymous $100; M Graham $25; Anonymous $20; Haisla Cancer Society $100; M Mueller $250; Full Gospel Bible Fellowship $343; Royal Bank Staff $50; Kitimat General Hospital Auxiliary $435; J Stephens $50; M McDonald $100; D Lessoway $50; J Nidd $50; Mr. & Mrs. R Reschke $50; Envision – D Turner volunteer $500; Envision – in lieu of Christmas cards $1000 and W. Weston Foundation – Canadian Food Banks $2261.
Thank you again to all the volunteers who so generously gave of their time helping to set up tables, sorting and wrapping gifts, taping boxes, sorting food, packing and delivering hampers. Once again we would like to thank Christ the King Catholic Church for the use of their hall during “hamper” week. Thank you to all the churches for the ongoing donations of food all year long and for the volunteers who ‘man’ the Food Bank on a weekly basis. Thank you to all the school students and staff as well as the local banks for the boxes of food and gifts they collected. Thanks to the Girl Guides for the gift certificates. Thank you to the B.C. Liquor Store for donating teddy bears again this year. Thanks to all the organizations that were so generous in particular the Kitimat Ice Demons, Snow Valley Skating Club and Kitimat Recreation Department. Special kudos to Overwaitea (for making up the $5 food gift bags for customers to purchase and drop into the Food Bank box – the items in these bags were valued far more than the $5 charged) as well as for the ongoing support throughout the year; Super Valu for everything they do at Christmas and all year long – we are indeed grateful. Thanks to the Quilter’s Guild who faithfully make up Christmas gift bags each year for the hamper gifts – these are a tremendous boon as many of the gifts are too awkward to put in gift wrap. Thanks again to Advantage Wings Travel and Dairy Queen for acting as collecting depots for gifts and food. Thank you all media who “spread the word” regarding the Hamper Appeal to all their readers, listeners and viewers. Thank you Gareen Ball and friends for hosting the annual Santa’s Workshop. Without this exposure our appeal would not be the success it is. Again we would like to thank everyone for being so generous again in 2009 – thank you for sharing and caring. Hopefully I have not forgotten anyone and please accept our appreciation.
We are very happy to accept donations throughout the year and these can be mailed to Box 20, V8C 1G6. All monies and food left over enables us to carry on throughout 2010. God bless you all.
