REPORTING · 16th January 2010

The Winter Festival d’Hiver 2010 is coming up and although it is shorter than last year, set over one weekend rather than two, it is still going to be pretty big. No major snow project is planned other than the hill for the Rail Jam and maybe a sledding hill. Still there are lots of events to attend and lots of prizes to be won.

The Festival begins on Friday, January 29th with the Rail Jam from 5-10 pm and ends with a concert of local bands. Food Venders will be present. Meanwhile, the Cheese Cake Burlesque Review is on at 8 pm at the Mount Elizabeth Theatre.

On the 30th, the Associations of Francophones and Francophiles du Nord Oust is holding it’s annual Maple Syrup Brunch starting at 11 am with Pinocchio, a puppet show put on by the Kitimat Public Library. On Saturday Evening, at 7 pm, the Kitimat Midget Hockey team will take on the Ice Demons.

Snow Mobile Rides and Snowshoeing Courtesy of the Kitimat Snowmobile and Hiking Club are planned for January 31st at Riverlodge and is dependant solely on the weather.

The Winter Festival ends on Monday, February 1st with a stage presentation. Medals will be awarded to students who participated in their School Olympics throughout the week prior and there will be a draw for the winner of the Free Trip to Vancouver. Around 12:17, the Olympic Torch travels through Kitimat leaving Riverlodge. The day ends with a free swim at the pool and skating at the Kitimat Ice Rink from 6-8.

According to Marcy Rice, prior to the Olympic Torch’s arrival, there will be speeches from local politicians, businesses and others. The torch is due to arrive at Riverlodge at 12:17 and quickly leave for Kitamaat Village at 12:43 from Shoppers Drug Mart. The route the torch will take is down Columbia, Quatsino, Lahakas and then to it’s final destination.

“We have to celebrate the nice things that we have around here. We have beautiful scenery and nice weather,” said Diane Dessureault, President of AFFNO.
